Martyn Colbeck

Martyn Colbeck is an award-winning film-maker and photographer who has been filming wildlife worldwide for over 20 years. Working mainly in association with the BBC's world-renowned Natural History Unit in the Bristol, Martyn has filmed sequences for many of the best-known blockbuster series produced by the BBC. He has also made many award-winning films on a variety of subjects including orang-utans, gelada baboons, pygmy chimpanzees and the mountains of Africa. Of the five elephant films he has made, three have been in association with Cynthia Moss of the Amboseli Elephant Research Project in Kenya. Together they have uniquely chronicled the life of a matriarch known as Echo and her family over a period of 15 years (The "Echo of the Elephants" trilogy).

Martyn has won many awards for his cinematography and stills photography. The most significant of these are Overall Winner of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year in 1993, Winner of the Gerald Durrell Award for endangered species in 1996, Winner and Runner up in the Black and White category of the 2005 Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition, as well as Best Cinematography at the two most prestigious wildlife film festivals in the world - The Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival in the USA and The Wildscreen International and Environmental Film festival in Bristol. Martyn is the only person to have won these top awards in both cinematography and stills photography.

In November 2006 the film "Eye for an Elephant" was shown on BBC-2's Natural World series and as "Unforgettable Elephants" on PBS in the USA. This film is a retrospective of Martyn's work with elephants and includes his favourite moments from the15 years he has spent filming and photographing them throughout Kenya, Namibia and the Congo.

More recently Martyn was a member of the award winning camera team on the highly-acclaimed BBC series "Planet Earth" and has just completed a new film about the desert elephants of the remote Kunene region of north-west Namibia, called "Elephant Nomads of the Namib Desert" for Animal Planet US and the BBC.
